From The pages of History

Jhansi ki Ranee (Kangna Ranaut )

Jhansi was small principality among native kingdoms dotted in Northern India prior to the era of 1857 known in Indian history as the year of great uprising or the 1st war of independence . Jhansi kee Ranee Lakshmi Bai attained the iconic status because she was the only war leader who died in actual combat sitting on the back of a horse wielding her sword among all the war leaders as Begam Hazrat Mahal , Tantia Tope , Nana Saheb of Bithur , Moulvi Amanullah. Only Veer Kunwar Singh of Jagdish Pur .Ara ,Bihar comes near her.

Jhansi Kee Ranee  has engraved herself in the heart of common Indians as statuette of supreme sacrifice ,thus transgressing maximum space in ballads ,poems , lore ,folklore & now in T.V. serials, films compared to other freedom fighters of that time  . In cine world film producers or directors find her story so tantalizing & sure passport of returning their investments come what may ,whether it is digital modern  India or India of any decade after attaining freedom from the yoke of slavery . The film 'Manikarnika' enacted by Kangna Ranut is just another film depicting the historical drama of 1857 & many more to come in incoming decades .

On 10th May 1857 rebellion broke out from Meerut cantonment & in no time it reached every British army cantonment like wild fire . Ranee of Jhansi perhaps never thought to rebel against British rule in India but Doctrine of Lapse enacted in British Parliament & vigorously piloted by Lord Dalhousie with elan ,cherry picking small kingdoms as Arcot in 1855, Satara in 1848 , Jhansi in 1854 & many others & their related pathetic stories brought a pall of gloom over such victim principalities . When Ranee of Jhansi heard about the annexation of the kingdom  of Jhansi to British rule ,she cried ' मैं अपनी झाँसी नहीं दूंगी '.

She was given a pension of of mere 60000 Rupees & ordered to live the Jhansi fort & palace to British establishment . In 1854 the annexation of Jhansi after the death of Raja Gangadhar Rao Newalkar in 1853 & just before his death ,his 4 month old son Anand Rao died & he adopted Damodar Rao son his cousin as the legal heir of his kingdom .  The Queen of Jhansi found herself in the vortex of events with no fault of hers & at the same time two neighboring principalities Datia & Orchha were making marauding attempts in Jhansi territory to gobble it up . During those two to three years Queen of Jhansi took permission from Captain Skene ,commissioner of Sagur division to raise an army against marauding state Datia & Orchha & permission was given till British reinforcement does not come to Jhansi to take the charge.

Queen of Jhansi was good administrator & kept Jhansi city calm & quiet by her deft administrative skills but from the month of May 1857, the events changed so fast for her & she lost control over the happenings in Jhasi city & her kingdom .

The massacre of about 60 British officers ,their families & children branded her  Queen Jezebel of India by Thomas Lowe an army doctor as per Wikipedia & a patriot par excellent by  folklore or oral history of contemporary period  force to take a dispassionate view over the saga of Ranee Laxami Bai
