From the Pages of Histry

This very poem of Subhadra Kumari Chouhan has also attained immortality & sometimes I think ,whether Queen of Jhansi had achieved this iconic status without this poem which has turned in to ballad !
Queen  of Jhansi (Kangna Ranaut)
Queen of Jhansi was not so impetuous who never thought over the repercussion of the outcome the battle against British forces rather she was more thoughtful among all the war leaders of the freedom struggle of 1857. The British general Huge Rose had commented in his war memorabilia ,queen of Jhansi was most dangerous among all the war leaders of her time who had irresistible charm , uprightness & valor to cast a trance over her followers !

The British government had officially assigned J.W.Kay & G.B. Mallison as official historians of the freedom  struggle of 1857 to chronicle the events, thus they had the access to every note , document, reportage of field officers from every theater of every event related to freedom struggle

In 1957 ,in the commemoration of the centenary of 1st war of Independence ,the Indian government assigned Mr. R.C. Mazumdar the eminent historian to write a book on freedom struggle ,with a Indian point of view over the  war events. He eruditely brought out a book 'Sepoy Mutiny & Revolt of 1857 depicting various  historical & momentous events & cause of defeat ,but it irked many Indian scholars & chief among them was Amrit Lal Nagar . This is because Mr R.C. Mazumdar ,never & ever resorted to 'Oral History' which is also a great source of editing actual historical events .In 1957 not the actual warriors were available but their son, grand son & descendants were available with 'Jangnama' to tell the actual events.

The saga of supreme sacrifice of Ranee Lakshmi Bai still reverberates & resonates in in the heart of Indians ,thus T.V. serials or film based on her life story always becomes surefire success & this is the reason ,people start believing in outlandish exaggeration of the events .

The timeline of events can be enumerated as such . On 10th May 1857 ,there was rebellion in Meerut cantonment which was very potent one, catalytic for engulfing every army establishment of Northern India .  Every army cantonment was in turmoil , every native soldier living in barracks Hindu or Muslim became blood thirsty of white skinned officers, their families throwing every religious tenets to the wind . In the span of 100 years from 1757 to 1857 ,there developed tremendous amount of animosity which is unfathomable .

The massacre of white officers & their family was done on 8th June 1857 in Jokam Bagh outside the precinct of palace , fort & city of Jhansi .British establishment thought ,it was done with connivance & machination of queen of Jhansi . But a peculiar story developed . Ranee Laxami Bai was made a virtual prisoner of the soldiers of army cantonment . They extorted fair amount of money from her , declared her as independent queen regent of Jhansi & as a army body proceeded towards Delhi to fight for Bahadur Sah Jaffar .

Risaldar Faiz Ali ,head of cavalry  of Jhansi cantonment did every thing in the name of queen Lakhami Bai ,enticed the hoard of English  officers to come out from the fort for reconciliation & guaranteed food & other provisions till a fresh arrangement for them  till safe place is not made for them . Hindu & Muslim soldiers made solemn declaration in the name of their God to gain their trust . The white officers , their wives & children came out from the confinement of fort & they were escorted to Jokam Bagh ,where they were   brutally massacred .

Maharaja of Jhansi had died in November 1853 & her kingdom was annexed in British establishment ,but her widow Ranee Laxami Bai had taken permission from political officer captain Alexander Skene  to administer kingdom of Jhansi territory till new British arrangements are not made. During these four & half years she was instrumental in raising new garrison ,ordered to mold new canons , brought out three heavy canons hidden in earth about three in numbers & the most famous cannon was 'Krukbijlee' which had very long range .She was administering her subject with fairness & aplomb at the same time .

After the massacre of English officers in Jokum Bagh ,for which many a notes, documents, witnesses provided against Ranee Laxami Bai, it became very clear to her that Britishers were not going to forgive her involvement of this deed .
Present day Jhansi Fort

Even up to March 1858 ,when Sir Huge Rose had already begun his campaign in central India, the Ranee Laxami Bai was unable to decide ,whether to fight against British or make terms with them . She would have chosen the later course if she succeeded in dispelling the suspicions the British against her

The Ranee sent pathetic appeals to the British authorities up to January 1858 & possibly even later protesting her innocence & professing her loyalty to the British in the most unequivocal terms .

It was only when the Ranee Lakshami Bai felt convinced that the British government will hold her responsible for the massacre of Englishmen at Jhansi & she would have to face a trial on this charge , she decided  to fight, preferring  an honorable death in battle field then to a noose of a hangman on a scaffold .

Once she arrived on this decision ,she never wavered for a moment & fought with courage & determination & with military skill which won her univocal admiration from her enemies even  after her death. This makes Ranee Lakshmi Bai great in every respect !
